Hard Water in Bali: Why it’s wrecking your hair (and the shower filter we swear by)

OK so real talk — when we first moved our treatments over to scalp facials and trichology consults, there was one thing that kept coming up that had nothing to do with products, stress, or genetics.

The water.

Specifically, the water coming out of the shower. Not the stuff you drink — that's a whole separate chat — but the water that's hitting your scalp every single day, sometimes twice a day if you're sweating it out in this heat.

Bali's water is hard — like, really hard. It's loaded with minerals — calcium, magnesium, plus whatever else has made its way through ageing pipes and groundwater that's under a lot of pressure right now. And every time you shower, that hard water is leaving a little something behind on your scalp and hair, whether you notice it or not.

You can use the most beautiful, low-tox shampoo in the world — and still be undone by what's coming out of your shower head before you even reach for the bottle.

What hard water in Bali is actually doing to your hair

Here's the bit nobody tells you. Hard water doesn't just feel different — it changes how your hair behaves and how your scalp functions, slowly, in the background, until one day you're wondering why your colour faded fast, your scalp feels tight and flaky, or your hair just looks... tired.

A few things going on:

WHAT HARD WATER LEAVES BEHIND

•  Mineral buildup that coats the hair shaft, dulling shine and making hair feel rough or heavy

•  A film on the scalp that can throw off its natural pH, leading to dryness, flaking, or irritation

•  Faster colour fade, since minerals interfere with how colour molecules sit in the hair

•  A barrier that stops your shampoo and conditioner from actually doing their job properly

•  Increased hair shedding — a disrupted scalp environment affects the hair growth cycle, and for many people living in Bali, unexplained shedding is one of the first signs that something's off at root level

So you could be doing everything right — sulphate-free shampoo, the good conditioner, scalp serums, the lot — and still feel like nothing's really sinking in. That's often because the water got there first.

This is exactly why we filtered our own showers

When we were setting up Tanah House, this was non-negotiable for us. If we're doing scalp facials, colour services, and trichology consults — and genuinely trying to support people's hair from the root — we can't have hard, chlorinated water undoing the work in the same breath.

So every shower at Tanah House runs through a filter. And because so many of you asked where to get one for home, we now stock them for retail too.

So, is it worth it?

If you're someone who colours your hair, has a sensitive or reactive scalp, or has just felt like your hair “isn't responding” to good products the way it should — yeah, honestly, it's worth it. It's one of those changes that doesn't ask much of you (no new routine, no extra steps) but quietly does a lot of the heavy lifting in the background.

And if you're not sure whether hard water is actually your issue, or there's something else going on with your scalp — that's exactly what our trichology consults at Tanah Roots are for. We look at the whole picture: your water, your products, your environment, your scalp itself, and figure out what's really going on.
