Why Your Shampoo Could Be Causing Scalp Problems (and what to look for instead)

OK so picture this.

You're standing in the shampoo aisle, you flip the bottle over to check the ingredients, and suddenly you're reading something that looks like it belongs in a chemistry exam.

You put it back.

You grab the one with the pretty label that says "nourishing", “repairing” or “salon quality”

Same thing…..Back on the shelf.

Here's the thing though — those labels are doing a lot of heavy lifting.

The lather, the silky slip, the smell that lingers all day.

Most of that is engineered to make you feel like it's working.

And real scalp health? That's a whole different conversation.

At Tanah Roots in Sanur, Bali, we regularly see clients struggling with scalp irritation, dryness, excess oil production, sensitivity and even hair shedding without realising that their everyday shampoo may be contributing to the problem.

I'm not here to send you into a spiral.

But as someone who looks at scalps all day, there are three ingredients I wish more people knew about — because once you see them, you can't unsee them.

Your scalp absorbs what you put on it. Every day, in small doses, it all adds up.

3 Common Shampoo Ingredients That May Affect Scalp Health

Sodium Lauryl Sulphate (SLS) & Sodium Laureth Sulphate (SLES)

Look for: SLS, SLES

This is your lather.

The big, satisfying foam that makes it feel like your hair is getting properly clean.

And look, it does clean — aggressively.

Too aggressively.

SLS strips your scalp of its natural oils so hard that your skin goes into overdrive trying to compensate.

The result can show up as greasiness, dryness, flaking, or irritation.

It's a cycle that's really easy to blame on your hair type when actually it's your shampoo.

Silicones

Look for: dimethicone, amodimethicone, anything ending in -cone, -conol, or -xane

Silicones are the glow-up ingredient — instant smoothness, instant shine, hair that feels like it's thriving.

The sneaky part is that most of them don't actually wash out.

They just... stay. And build up over time. coating the hair shaft and creating the illusion of healthy hair while preventing moisture and beneficial ingredients from penatrating.

Eventually your hair feels heavy and dull and weirdly limp….lifeless.

Then, we buy more product to fix it, which usually contains more silicone.

If your hair has been feeling ‘off’ lately and you can't figure out why — honestly, check your conditioner first.

Synthetic Fragrance

Look for: parfum, fragrance

This one is wild to me.

"Fragrance" on an ingredient list is basically a legal loophole.

Brands aren't required to disclose the individual ingredients used to create that scent, so one word can cover dozens of undisclosed chemicals.

Some are known irritants,.

Some are hormone disruptors.

And some people are reacting to them without ever connecting the dots.

Even products marketed as ‘gentle’ or ‘clean’, can contain synthetic fragrance, making this one of the most important ingredients to watch for if you have a sensitive scalp.

What to look for instead

You don't have to overhaul everything overnight — that's overwhelming and honestly unnecessary.

If you’re looking to support healthier hair and scalp wellness, start with your shampoo.

Look for formulas that are free from sulphates, silicones and synthetic fragrances. Gentle plant-based cleansers, botanical extracts and naturally derived ingredients can help cleanse the scalp without disrupting its natural balance.

Small changes often create the biggest results over time.
